“Kingston would you hand me that chisel over there?” Calvin asked as he pointed to the tool on the large cluttered table.
“Sure thing Pop.” Kingston replied as he retrieved the tool.
“Thanks.” Calvin said as he examined the tool before using it.
“Pop exactly what are you building?” Kingston asked as he sat on a stool in his father’s workshop. Wearing a pair of jeans with a long sleeve red t-shirt and black sneakers, he sat watching his father.
This was not the first time he had been in his wood shop. He had spent many days and sometimes nights in the shop watching his father. Calvin was a master builder of many different things throughout the years. From simple wood he had made beautiful book shelves, rocking chairs, a few end tables and countless other items as well.
“I am making your niece Gemma a doll house for her birthday.” Calvin answered as he chiseled away at the wood.
The resemblance of Calvin and his son Kingston was very obvious. The two six feet plus chocolate complexioned men had the same slender physique and matching gray eyes. The only major difference between the two was that Calvin had gray and pepper hair. Kingston on the other hand, had no hair.
Dressed in old black sweatpants, he wore the matching sweatshirt. Comfortably he worked in his huge shop. His shop was surrounded by tools hanging on walls, on tables and in tool cabinets. Surrounding them were an abundance of paint cans, wood and many other things.
“That is going to be some doll house.” Kingston said admiring the tall wood lying on the table.
Grabbing the sandpaper, Calvin replied. “Whatever my grandbaby wants, that is what she gets.”
He could have been a professional craftsman but he chose not to. Although he loved his hobby, his heart was in running his family business, Carter Market.
“Pop, the house is going to be bigger than she is.” Kingston said.
“Your point is what?” Calvin asked nonchalantly as he picked up his hammer.
“Never mind Pop.” Kingston decided to change the subject.
Kingston just smiled at his father. “Speaking of little girl. Have I got a story to tell you?”
“Well before you start, can you hand me that old paint can under the table?” Calvin asked as he pointed to the wooden table in the far corner.
“Why are you using paint when you haven’t even finished building the house yet?” Kingston asked as he retrieved the paint for his father.
“Who says its paint?” Calvin opened the can and pulled out a bottle of soda.
“Pop!” Kingston exclaimed as he started laughing.
“What?” Calvin asked as he opened and drink from the bottle.
“Mom is going to get you when she finds out you have been drinking soda again.”
“Didn’t the doctor tell you to stay away from soda?” Kingston asked his father.
“First off, your mother has to catch me first. Secondly, my doctor said to stay away from it because it was bad for my health. He didn’t actually say I couldn’t drink it.” Calvin explained to Kingston while he took a seat on the other stool.
